Google releases virtual Search Appliance

Google's Search Appliance hardware  which can be used to index and search content not exposed to the internet like internal documents, has never really caught on. Though Google has never revealed the number of Search Appliances it has sold, most people agree that the number is not large. To bolster the sales of the search appliance Google has now released a virtual version of the appliance which can be run in Vmware. Its capabilities are limited compared to the hardware appliance.

It is free software download and is intended to be used as a platform for developers to build and test applications against Google enterprise search technology. Since it is intended only as a development platform, there is no support options available except developer forums.
